Microsoft has been on a roll since E3 2012, and from all the recent announcements, the company doesn't seem to have any plan in the pipleline to slow down and give the completion a chance to redeem themselves. Just after the whole Office 2013 announcement, Microsoft made available the new Office Web Apps for SkyDrive for everyone who is willing. One thing we can say, Google Docs is officially dead, and SkyDrive Web Apps is the new king of the office suite in the cloud.

The new Office Web Apps is the change we have been waiting for, ever since Microsoft released the first version back in 2010. First thing, an user will notice is how it looks the same as Office 2013 and everything is so easy to use, something users have been begging for since, well, forever.

The overall look and feel are not the only new addition here. With HTML5 at the helm of Office Web Apps, the overall suit now works well in every browser, no need for a plug-in to launch a word document from the Web in word on your computer. Performance is faster and for those with a touchscreen computer/tablet/smartphone, the suite has been optimized for use on those devices.

For those on a smartphone such as Windows Phone iOS and Android, Office Web Apps will work better in your browsers. This is the thing we hate so much about Google Dos, it has problems working correctly across all mobile browsers, which is a true pain for those who rely a lot of Google Docs through their day-to-day activity.

One missing feature that users went crazy over, was word count. You'll be happy to know that it has been added. Gone are the days when you have to fire up a document in word on the desktop to figure out how many words you have written. Took a while for Microsoft to add this feature, but to us, better late than never.

If there is anything we are angry about, it would have to be automatic saving. Not every time someone remembers to save their work, so Microsoft needs to have this feature as a part of the Office Web Apps for the sake of protecting the work of all SkyDrive users who uses Word Web App on a regular basis.

So is Google Docs truly dead? Sure thing it is. Google Docs is just a poor man's version of Microsoft Office, and while it saw many improvements over the years, it is still not good enough to convince us to make the switch.

Google needs to be out with all guns blazing if it wants to keep ahead of Microsoft in the cloud.
