Marvel fans have known for a while now that 2017 will be a year full of treats, as Fox and Marvel will join forces on two "X-men" TV shows. A really odd entry this year is "Legion," an eight-episode series set to make Dan Stevens a powerful mutant with multiple personality disorder. Noah Hawley of Fargo fame is to helm the TV series and, already, it looks nothing like your usual superhero show.
At the Television Critics Association winter press tour, the producers and cast explained why they wanted the "Legion" TV series to break away from the current superhero trend. "If we remove the genre, is there a compelling show that you would want to watch there?," Hawley said, via TVLine. The show's distinct feature begins with "this epic love story" between tortured mutant David (Dan Stevens) and fellow mental patient Syd (Rachel Keller) and then "putting the genre back in it," the show's creator added.
The time period for "Legion" is hard to guess, but from the teasers it seems the creative behind the show aimed for a '60s and '70s vibe; however, futuristic technology can also be observed. Hawley revealed that one of the upcoming TV series goals is to put the audience inside the mind of David and experience what he's experiencing. Simply put, the lead character's perception of reality swings between retro and futuristic, Movie Pilot has observed.
Meanwhile, Marvel is pretty stoked that "Legion" is wading in unexplored waters. Executive producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who works on the "X-Men" films, sees the "Legion" TV series as a way to mine some "X-Men" characters that fans will not see in the movies. Marvel TV EP Jeph Loeb also said that "Legion" is something Marvel has never ventured in before.
"Legion" the TV series will air February 8, 2017 at 10:00 p.m. slot on FOX. Check out the "Sunset" teaser promo below.
