Apple has revealed its latest iPhone models in San Francisco today and they are without the standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Tech experts are of the opinion that Apple's move to completely remove the audio jack will have an immense impact across the tech industry. The experts believe that this move by Apple could mean the end of the 3.5mm headphone jack and other such wired headphones altogether.
Since the Walkman, the 3.5mm headphone jack became the industry standard and now Apple is looking to move on from it to something more sophisticated. However, users will not have to buy new headphones immediately and they will for now connect to the iPhone via Apple's lightning connector or wirelessly. The new model will ship with an adapter. The 3.5mm headphone jack removal is a big move for the industry as a whole.
"What might happen is that handsets that have headphone jacks might be considered antiques. Especially once competitors' models start appearing without headphone jacks," Managing Director of Telsyte, Foad Fadaghi, told the ABC.
However, Apple still has an interest in supporting its older iPhone models and it is one of the company's strategies to use this as platform to reduce price of older models. These handsets often do very well. The Cupertino tech giant removed the 3.5mm headphone jack to allow more technology to be packed into the phone. Apple is also in an enviable position and can drive change in the market.
This is very typical of Apple where it popularizes a technology with its sheer ability to reach a massive customer base. Of course, there have been extreme reactions from many but the move won't materially affect Apple's sales. In fact, sales may increase due to heightened awareness around the product. Speaking about Apple's competitors, Fadaghi said soon everybody will follow suit both in the smartphone as well as headphone market.
