How powerful Nintendo's next generation gaming console will be hasn't been confirmed, but the expectation is that it will rival current HD console. Beyond that developers have remained quiet on gaming coming to the console, but Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada claims it is - in some senses - underpowered compared to current consoles.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Harada revealed that development of Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for the Wii U isn't far behind the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions but the development has required "creative" approaches to stay on target. "I think maybe the game is coming along smoother than most people would think, as far as the look of the game.
"I guess they're trying to keep power consumption down so we have to come up with creative ways to get around that and that's taking a little bit of time," Harada said.
Harada also said Tekken x Street Fighter - the crossover title of the two franchises - is planned for current generation hardware, despite 11 months left before Microsoft and Sony probably announce the next generation Xbox and PlayStation consoles. The feeling is that current consoles will remain supported for a year or two, before developers jump to the new platforms.
"For example on PS3 it was kind of difficult at first, but if you made good use of the different cores, you could split up the processing tasks and you could achieve very good effects. But this is kind of a different issue than that," Harada added.
Tekken x Street Fighter was announced in 2010 and the Street Fighter x Tekken counterpart launched March 2012, which was met with a mixed reception. While the latter brought Tekken characters into a 2D world, the former will take Street Fighter characters into 3D.
Nintendo basically has a year to gain third party support and lock customers into the Wii U, assuming the other next-generation consoles retail from winter 2013. If developers are already having issues with development then, like the PlayStation 3 due to its Cell architecture, developers could flock to another platform that easier for development and perhaps more capable.
