Quietly releasing in a period where game releases are practically non-existent, Frogger: Hyper Arcade Edition brings a remastered Frogger experience along with 8 different game modes and an unexpected remix of Draft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.
Along with the regular version of Frogger, where player have to get across the river eight times while avoiding vehicles and crocodiles, there are new modes such as Tile Capture - where players move across the environment to claim tiles and lock them in by getting to the other side of the river, supporting up to four players; Frogger Freak Out, which cycles through the modes WarioWare style though lacks the quick transitions across game modes the latter title has; Battle Royal, where players become "King Frog" and squash other players; Lady Frog Rescue, where players have to rescue the female frog for points; a Twin Frogger mode where two frogs can be controlled simultaneously; and Paint, where tile patterns have to be painted to progress. The other visual styles aren't available when playing the multiplayer modes, though. That's because some modes are based around the title of the Hyper style.
There's only local multiplayer, which seems strange considering up to four players are supported. 12 music tracks can be switched between.
When playing the classic version of Frogger there are numerous visual styles to choose from, including a Contra visual style - complete with vehicles and enemies from the game - and a "Hyper" theme with makes everything turn bright with a sci-fi feel. A Castlevania theme can also be unlocked by completing all of the game's challenges. For those who want the truly classic experience, an 8-bit mode is usable but it doesn't seem to be the original arcade visual style.
The game is also available on Xbox Live Arcade for 800 Microsoft Points ($10), which may seem a little steep for a game that's probably going to be a 15-minute excursion outside of the hardcore fans.
The universal app for iOS is available now for $0.99 at a 50-percent-off price. A gameplay video is below.
