“Tout’d,” a social media app for providing recommendations on anything a user asks, has been announced. The service is built by Wall Street veterans Rob Morelli and Saro Cutri, and aims to leverage the trust friends have.
“Tout’d takes what happens in the real world, word of mouth, and spreads it through connected networks father and faster than it ever could on its own. Our mission is to make a real impact in the social search and referral space by by simplifying how recommendations are sourced and by personalizing those results so they are extremely valuable for our users,” Morelli said in the press release.
Tout’d isn’t completely open: it’s built for friend or friends-of-friends which allows for more reliable recommendations and likes. Tout’d users can ask a question on anything, from a “romantic restaurant to a fun iPhone app for toddlers.”
It sounds like a hybrid of Facebook’s Like system and Foursquare. The latter allows users to check-in on areas, and recommend if experiences are positive.
Users can give advice on local products and businesses, and “friend source” questions for multiple answers. Microsoft’s Bing search engine offers similar services in the U.S.: on a right-hand pane, users can post a question to Facebook or view who likes searches being made. From Bing, pre-configured “experts” are shown via Twitter and can be tweeted.
The press release added recommendations for businesses means the presence is expanded faster than word of mouth, because only trusted friends will recommended businesses. “Businesses are in essence marketing themselves through their best and most loyal customers,” it added.
Tout’d apparently makes reviews more accountable than other review sites - such as Travel Advisor for example - because one review rather than a hundred could have as big an impact because it’s from a friend.
Tout'd is available for iOS and Android as a mobile Web app. Since users can ask anything, it's basically like asking a friend who's knowledgeable in the technology area about a smartphone. Users can sign up, or use a Facebook account.
