Buying an iPad is often only half the battle, because users then want to find cases or dock connectors or bags to store the device. The problem is that there are a huge amount to choose from, so what good products have risen to the top?

Camera Connection Kit

A classic case of Apple monetizing accessories, the Camera Connection Kit is an expensive-yet-simple accessory which allows users to put digital photos onto the iPad. If Apple had included USB support then the accessory would be a useless, but the $29 solution is the best bet for getting photos to the device.

The Connection Kit includes adapters with an SD card and USB slot, which in turns brings greater functionality for other USB devices.

Smart Cover

A no-brainer, the Smart Cover is a polyurethane cover over the iPad's screen that is simply pulled back and rests as a kickstand. It also turns the iPad's screen off when resting, and on when pulled back. For $39 it's tad expensive, but has been praised for its functionality and lightweight design.

The reason the 2012 Smart Case hasn't be recommended is because it just isn't as good, bringing problems such as added thickness and not-that-great protection, so those in the market for a case have better solutions available. Just do a quick search on Amazon for "iPad case," or something similar.

Apple Bluetooth Keyboard

Apple's bluetooth wireless keyboard is probably one of the cheapest and most well designed iPad keyboards around, and a great keyboard anyway, which can also be used with an iMac or MacBook if desired. The iPad's virtual keyboard is great, but for extended productivity sessions it's perhaps not the most comfortable. Combined with the HDMI connector, using an iPad for longer is even easier. It's available for $69 from the Apple Web site.

Digital AV Adapter

Once again, another expensive accessory for the iPad - $39 - that brings functionality: users get HDMI output and the ability to charge the iPad while using HDMI with the Digital AV Adapter. It seems like the kind of functionality Apple could integrate, particularly as the dedicated apps for the device often use the added screen estate in ways that would look even better on a TV or monitor.

iTunes Gift Card

Perhaps the ultimate accessory, the iTunes Gift Card will allow friends and family to buy apps for free up to the value of the card. Prices are as low as $15, and as high as $100, so if someone isn't that fond of added bulk or using the iPad with a TV this could be a simple yet effective gift.
