According to a report, Apple is working on a new podcast app for iOS 6. AllThingsD was the first to report on this development.

Apple presented most of the notable features of iOS 6 at the Annual Developers Conference recently. But it seems the company is still hiding some features under its sleeve. There are reports roaming around in the Internet that the beta version of iOS 6 available for download does not include the usual podcasts section. It is possible that Apple is still working on that function and did not add it on the beta version.

AllThingsD have something different to say about this. "People familiar with Apple's plans tell me that when its new iOS 6 software becomes widely available this fall, podcasts will have their own app, where users will be able to discover, download and play them on mobile devices. Users who access iTunes via laptop and desktop machines will still find them in that version of iTunes, though," Peter Kafka reported.

So, if the news is true, Apple is working on a standalone app for podcasts. The company did something similar last year by breaking the iTunes player app into separate apps. It did the same thing when it released iBooks. The iTunes U lecture series that can be accessed using the download option from the main iTunes window also features its own app.

Apple didn't comment anything on the report yet. But there is surely something going on as iOS 6 is not showing iTunes U, Audiobooks and Podcasts section in its iTunes app.
