Retailers have great Christmas sale and consumers who want to have a pair of smart speakers are having a hard time deciding which to buy - Amazon Alexa or Google Home. The former has been inside hundreds of houses for the last two years, while Google Home has just begun.

In general, these gadgets will do the same things like play music and answer relevant, or sometimes, silly questions. They can also control your smart home products. At voice command, it can turn off your garage light, find your phone and set the timer on, among many other mundane tasks.

Eventually, many think that Amazon Alexa or Google Home can turn your home into a mini "Star Wars," just without the presence of R2-D2 and C-3PO. It is a bit creepy to know that these speakers are always listening to your conversation waiting for you to say the wake word. Amazon Alexa glows blue when it hears the command word, while Google Home's LED lights activate when it hears the words "Okay, Google."

Both Amazon Alexa and Google Home support third party music streaming services like Pandora, Spotify and TuneIn. However, since both companies have their own music services, they prioritize their brands -- Amazon has Prime Music and Google Home has Google Play Music.

Amazon Alexa will allow music services if you pair it using a Bluetooth device, while Google Home can stream audio services using Chromecast support mobile app. A YouTube Red subscriber can play songs directly from YouTube Music.

On the other hand, Google Home has the solution whenever you cannot remember the title of the songs. The able Google Assistant can understand which song you are referring to by merely giving a contextual description. This feature is something Amazon Alexa has still to come up with in the future.

Overall, Google Home cannot match Amazon Alexa's third-party apps, but it has access to all Google accounts and all data that comes with it. Your choice of smart speaker will greatly depend which suits your needs and style.
