Foursquare has completely revamped its iOS app, bringing features such as a new Explore tab and recommendations dependent on the weather and hotspots in the city. Locals and tourists even get different recommendations.

Design

The revamped app's design is "vibrant and clean," according to The Verge, featuring a news feed focused on photos, a check-in button in the top right-hand corner and profile pages that show information such as stats and the amount of badges.

The Explore tab has also been revamped, that pulls in data on every Foursquare user and creates "incredibly relevant recommendations." Tapping Explore brings up sandwich shops during lunch, or bars worth going to if it's early in the morning, for example. Recommendations are apparently provided on a "massive amount of data points" when deals are available.

Tracking Behavior

The Verge described a situation about being out around lunch-time, and users are posting news on dumpling places. If a user has expressed a previous interest in dumplings, Foursquare will provide recommendations.

"We use map data to define neighborhoods and see trends within those neighborhoods from users because you live your life in a neighborhood. If I visit Lincoln Park in Chicago for the first time, I can open the app and see the vibe of that neighborhoods," Andrew Hogue - Head of Search at Foursquare - said.

Foursquare knows where you have visited, and visiting other cities can show the most popular Tourist areas through Explore. Locals will see areas that haven't been tried, ensuring each type of persons gets a different (but relevant) experience.

"For every two degrees the temperature goes up, check-ins at ice cream shops go up by 2% ... In New York, people don't cross Houston street to go for lunch. One side if NYU and the other side if shopping and Louis Vuitton," Hogue added. Foursquare can track behavior in cities.

Recommending Locations

A Like feature has also been integrated, which allows users to endorse a place with or without checking in. "If you check into a place, it doesn't mean you like it there. In fact, it might actually be a negative endorsement if you don't check in there again," Houge added.

The updated Foursquare app is available on the iOS App Store and Android's Google Play.
