id Software has announced it is to re-release Doom 3 for new players to franchise, called the BFG Edition. It will include the full Doom back catalogue along with updated graphics and levels.
The BFG Edition will include the updated graphics and controls, extra missions and other improvements that will serve as an introduction to new players.
"If one were working on that it would be a perfect precursor," id Software's Creative Director - Tim Willits - said to The Verge on the subject of releasing the BFG Edition while building a sequel to Doom 3.
"A number of companies have done these 'retro' projects,' but we're trying to do something with new content. We have all the games. We tried to make the offering the best we can," Willits added.
The BFG Edition includes Doom, Doom 2, Doom 3, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil and a new mission for Doom 3 with seven new levels and a new boss. It will run for about two-three hours.
As noticeable in the trailer video below, graphics have been reworked with 3D support built in. Controls are also modified for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. On the Xbox 360, players can use guns and the flashlight simultaneously (not possible when the game originally arrived on consoles).
Willits also said to The Verge the company used message boards to address the flashlight issue, along with too-dark levels and the difficulty.
"We've tried to find those opportunities that can enhance the gameplay. We didn't have to enough ammo in the original. It was too dark. There weren't checkpoint saves. No flashlight. That one was so big, we put it on a sell sheet," Willits added.
The new mission - called "Lost Mission" - focuses on Bravo Team, the marines sent to be saved in Doom 3. It begins with a member of Bravo Team helping scientists close a portal so demon's can't travel to Earth. It runs concurrently to the events of Doom 3, and will be a "long offering" according to id software Technical Director John Carmack.
The Doom 3 BFG Edition arrives in 2012; no firm release date or pricing has been announced.
