Coming back to Adult Swim's Toonami programming block after its successful 52-episode run between 2001 and 2004, the time-displaced samurai hero will finish what he has left more than a decade ago.

Voice actor Phil LaMarr will reprise his role as the voice of the title character Jack. He earlier declined to confirm his recasting, but an official behind the scenes video later confirmed that he will be returning as Jack's voice.

Series creator Genndy Tartakovsky also confirmed that the Scotsman will return to the series. However, a new actor will voice series' main villain Aku, due to the passing of Mako Iwamatsu in 2006. Tartakovsky stated that while "the person does a very good imitation, nobody can replace Mako."

Meanwhile, it has been reported that writer and storyboard artist Chris Reccardi announced a March 2017 premiere date on his official Facebook page. However, Toonami's showrunner Jason DeMarco has stated that the premiere date for "Samurai Jack" has not been set yet. Reccardi later deleted his Facebook post.

Jack will appear significantly different this time from his earlier appearances, both in terms of personality and character design, as the story will pick up fifty years after the end of the 52nd episode.

A previous report teased about the story's more mature story and darker tone, according to executive producer Tartakovsky. He said that the upcoming fifth season will be more episodic, and will still include a lot of action.

Screenwriter Darrick Bachman stated "Samurai Jack" will be probably be even more badass than before, and viewers will see Jack in a new standpoint. He also mentioned that in the original series, Jack was a heroic person on a very rigid quest. Many years after the series' last episode, Jack's new adventure will be "a story of redemption and him trying to find who he is again."

Fans may be able to see the episode premiere of "Samurai Jack" Season 5 in early 2017. Stay tuned for more updates.
