Windows Phone might not be doing well in many parts of the world, but one country where the people are adopting Windows Phone in drones, is China. Just two months after the first set of Windows Phones entered the Chinese market, the platform made giant strides to take 7% of the market. Along the way, Windows Phone caught up with and surpassed the iPhone. The only important platform ahead of Windows Phone right now is Android.

Microsoft's goal is to overtake Android. This could happen if everything continues to go as planned, another 7% growth in similar time frame would propel Windows Phone to be viewed as a viable alternative to Android, which would boost growth more significantly.

Michel van der Bel, COO Greater China Region at Microsoft said:

"Our smartphone and tablet-pc are hybrid, making them suitable for the consumer, but also easy to insert within an existing company infrastructure. This will allow us to better anticipate the consumerization of IT than many competitors. "

The IDC thought Microsoft would gain 7.5% marketshare in China this year, while bumping to 15% in 2013 to surpass iOS, which was expected to have 13% shares by then. Unfortunately for Apple, things didn't go as IDC planned, as iOS only has 6% share hold on China, with Android taking a massive 69% of the overall market.

China is the most important smartphone market since it took the reins from the United States to have more smartphone users and more Android device activations per month. The battle to dominate the smartphone space will definitely be fought in China (a country with a population over 1.3 billion cannot be taken lightly). With Nokia finally making the push with Windows Phone worldwide, we have the feeling Microsoft will get what it wants in a shorter time frame than previously expected.

Furthermore, we have to add that it is surprising to see Windows Phone overtaking iOS so early in the game since the platform officially launched in China on March 21 2012. Gaining 7% in 2 months is just plain unbelievable.

What's left for Microsoft and Windows Phone? The Marketplace needs to have more apps. Only 90,000 applications are a part of the Windows Phone marketplace, which is a far cry from the number of apps iOS and Android has.
