"Android fragmentation" has been a consistent criticism against the mobile operating system, claiming too many devices are available across many versions of the OS. That may or may not be true - though Google is rumored to be unveiling version 5.0, Jelly Bean, at the Google I/O conference in June - but the range of Android devices has been revealed.

OpenSignalMaps provided the data, and provided a free Android app which revealed the strongest and weakest cell signals. After collecting data from devices using the app - and introducing an online Web version showing the amount of Android devices - the company has brought the data together, revealing the most popular Android manufacturers.

Android devices using the app were tracked six months ago - around December - with 681,000 devices tracked. The company said it looked at model, brand, the version of Android used and screen size. Some of the device used custom ROMs, overwriting the Android.build.MODEL variable Maps used for the device model.

"That said most of these are genuine devices, just not popular ones. Some examples of these solitary devices include: the Concorde Tab (a hungarian 10.1-inch device), the Lemon P1 (a dual SIM Indian phone), the Energy Tablet i724 (a Spanish tablet aimed at home entertainment, the EBEST E68, [and] the MASTONE W18," the company added on its Web site.

599 "distinct" brands were spotted, though some were custom ROMs. Examples include two FusionGarage tablets and 200 from Marvell, not the comic book company but a company manufacturing Android devices.

Samsung holds the majority of Android devices, with 40 percent or 270,144 devices. The Galaxy S2 was reported to have sold around 20 million devices, while Samsung overtook Nokia and became the largest phone maker in the world.

OpenSignalMaps also compared the shares of different Android versions. In 2011 the dominant OS was Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with 65.6 percent, with Android 2.3.3+ in second with 24.4 percent - a revision of 2.3.3 which included NFC and voice integration. In 2012, 2.3.3+ is the dominant version with 55.4 percent. Android 2.2, with 20.5 percent, came second.

Android's newest versions, 4.0-4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich, took a combined 8.9 percent. Conversely, the oldest version of Android - version 1.4 - available is still in use with a 1.4 percent share.

OSM tracked device resolutions, from 240x180 to 2040x1152. The most common resolutions seemed to be around the 592x400 range, with a 5:3 aspect ratio most popular, according to the report.

By comparison, Apple's devices feature four resolutions. That's probably the iPhone-3GS, the Retina display iPhone 4 and 4S, the iPad and iPad 2, and the new iPad which has a Retina display.
