The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the next iPhone will have an updated 4-inch display, but this is nothing we haven't heard before. The only difference is now we have the WSJ on the 4-inch new iPhone display bandwagon, which could make these rumors a little more legitimate. An iPhone with a display bigger than 3.5-inch wouldn't be surprising, but it would be the first time Apple takes such a bold step.
We understand the information reaching the WSJ comes from Apple suppliers that are working on the iPhone 5 display. The screen is measured to be 4-inch diagonally, and manufacturing, if everything goes as expected, should be beginning next month. If this is the case, then the launch of the iPhone 5 shouldn't be too far off, which makes September a good time for Apple to let the dogs out.
LG Display, Sharp, and Japan Display Inc are the three main panel suppliers Apple is in talks with; Samsung is nowhere to be found, which is bad news for Samsung if the company loses its main smartphone display buyer.
It would be interesting to see how Apple goes about moving from a 3.5-inch to a 4-inch display. Apple treats the iPhone as a one handed device, so according to the company, 3.5-inch works better for one handed use than a 4-inch display, or the Galaxy S2's massive 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display. There's also the talk about Apple not wanting to lose the iPhone's aspect ratio for apps. We doubt the company would have a choice in the matter - it's either an iPhone 5 with a bigger display or a dead-before-arrival iPhone 5.
Smartphone users require a bigger display to view videos and the Web more vividly. There are so many Android- and Windows Phone-based smartphones out there which spoiled users with big screens that for many, there is no going back, and this is why Apple cannot afford to falter with the iPhone 5 display or the company would risk giving up the iron throne.
