Blizzard has announced that there will be no legacy server talks for "World of Warcraft" until after its annual Blizzcon event.
The issue on legacy servers started earlier this year when Blizzard shut down custom vanilla "World of Warcraft" private server Nostralius. Despite the community raising a petition to restore the server, the developer has upheld its decision for Nostralius to remain closed.
"Why not just let Nostalrius continue the way it was? The honest answer is, failure to protect against intellectual property infringement would damage Blizzard's rights," Blizzard wrote on the Battle.net forums. "This applies to anything that uses WoW's IP, including unofficial servers."
"And while we've looked into the possibility-there is not a clear legal path to protect Blizzard's IP and grant an operating license to a pirate server," the company added.
Now Blizzard has confirmed that while they are considering the idea, no details about legacy servers will be discussed at Blizzcon this year.
"We've seen some talk among the community that you might be expecting to hear some news on legacy servers at BlizzCon," Blizzard VP and "World of Warcraft" production director J. Allen Brack wrote on the forums, "and we just wanted to take a moment to let you know that while we're still discussing the possibility, we won't have any updates to share on that until after the show."
Earlier this month, Nostalrius has issued a statement confirming that Blizzard is well aware of the legacy server issues.
"They know that the need is here with around 300,000 players signing our petition and the statistics from the survey we published (answered by 50,000 WoW gamers) showing that players are ready to pay a subscription fee for it." Nostalrius said on its official forums.
"According to the discussion we had since our official meeting at their headquarters, they now have everything in their hands to fulfil the large community request for Legacy servers," Nostalrius continued, "solving all the previous technical issues they highlighted during the feedback they provided."
"As a consequence, if Blizzard doesn't make an announcement to honour their own core values, be sure that we will," the team concluded.
Will Nostalrius finally make a move? Stay tuned for more BlizzCon 2016 news.
