There is no doubt the Apple iPhone 5 is launching this year, but for those who are expecting it to show its sexy head at the World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco two months from now, (June 11-15 2012) should forget it completely because it is unlikely for Apple to show off its new smartphone at a conference that is all about getting developers more familiar with Apple software.
There are quite a few reasons apart from focusing on the developer aspect of WWDC why Apple would consider holding off the announcement of the iPhone 5. This device will be Apple's biggest and most important launch of the year, and the company cannot afford to mess it up in any way possible. Check out the other reasons why we think it's a fat chance that iPhone 5 will debut at WWDC.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Probably the biggest reason for the delay is the upcoming launch of the Samsung Galaxy S3. Galaxy S family of Android smartphones is the closest thing to competition the iPhone has, and this competition is expected to get even more intense when Samsung takes the lid off the Galaxy S3 next week (May 3). The device is shaping up to be a killer smartphone with its rumored 4.6-inch display, 1.4GHz quad core Exynos processor, and Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich sitting at the helm.
iPhone 4S Launch Was In October
Announcing the iPhone 5 in June would be too early for Apple, considering the previous device was launched in October of 2011. Yes, there will be hot competition from Android devices, and even those from Windows Phone straight from the Nokia Lumia camp. However, we believe the iPhone 4S is capable of holding its own in a sea of more power devices until October 2012.
WWDC is more focused on software
When Apple sent out the invitations for WWDC, something important was mentioned that to us, is the nail in the coffin to anyone with the idea that the iPhone 5 will make an appearance at WWDC. According to the invitation snippet, there's a little thing there at that says, "join us for a preview of the future of iOS and Mac OS X." Clearly it is saying that Apple will not be announcing the new iPhone at WWDC, and would most likely put focus on October. Expect iOS 6 to show up. Not iPhone 5.
Long Term Evolution (LTE)
Every top of the line smartphone is launching out with LTE and Apple cannot afford to release the iPhone 5 without it or it will be left behind in a technological sense. We expect Apple to change the design of the iPhone to accommodate the LTE chip along with space for a bigger battery. And that takes time.
So, if you're expecting to see iPhone 5 at WWDC, we've got this to say - fat chance.
