It's pretty debatable if the upcoming "God of War" for the PS4 is "God of War 4" or simply "God of War" reboot. Some fans may also be wondering why it is now set in Norse mythology, while Kratos was originally from a Greek myth. Here's our view on these questions and changes.
First and foremost, even with the title "God of War," the game is still, by no means, not a reboot. Technobuffalo did a cover about Creative Director Cory Barlog's explanation. He stated that a reboot would have been "too easy" for them, hence Santa Monica Studio went with lore's continuity.
There's no clear indication though as to where the story picks up from the original series, but Barlog hinted that it continues from PS3's "God of War 3" in the statement below:
"For Kratos, this change means breaking the cycle of violence, distrust and deception that his family, the Greek pantheon, perpetuated for so long. That cycle drove a whole host of bad decisions - the ill-fated deal with Ares, the murder of his family and a rage fueled descent into madness and vengeance that ultimately ended with the epic destruction of Olympus."
Kratos' family was murdered and this was one of the reasons that fueled his rage against the Greek Gods. Now with his "Son" in "God of War" for PS4, we still have no clue who the kid is exactly.
The may be considered as part reboot and part sequel, but not the extremes and it is not a bad thing at all.
The other question is, why Norse mythology?
Santa Monica Studio didn't exactly mention the reason behind the leap from another lore, but Barlog did say that "Ghost of Sparta" was set in Norway. It was just on or before the viking era.
Barlog also mentioned that the only fine line separating Greek and Norse mythology was the geographical difference, providing "God of War" are justifiable shift.
This may be a risky move, especially for the cult following of "God of War," but being set in an entirely new mythological setting also breaths new life to the series.
Stay tuned for updates and news regarding "God of War" for PS4 and here's to looking forward to hunting down dragons in Midgard, Valhalla, Niflheim, or anywhere in between!
