Episode 3 Connection With "Goodbye Despair"

The third episode, titled "A Farewell To All Futures" ties up the anime series to a particular event in the second game, "Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair."

During a scene in the game, Monokuma gave the group a motive in the form of a video game, "The Twilight Syndrome". As the group later discovered, the story of the game actually happened in real life, which was shown in Episode 3.

Mahiru Koizumi's best friend, Sato, gets in a fight with Fuyuhiko Kuzuryu's sister, Natsumi. Natsumi vows to get in the Main Course through whatever means possible, and implies that she can easily take Mahiru's spot if something happens to her.

Natsumi opened up to Hinata about wanting to get into the Main Course.

Meanwhile, Sato promises to protect Mahiru. The following day, Natsumi was murdered. It was revealed in the game during one of the class trials that it was Sato who ended Natsumi's life, and Fuyuhiko sought revenge against Sato and killed her.

The Izuru Kamakura Project

The events in the episode also showed Ultimate Boxer Juzo Sakakura beating up Hinata, telling him that people are worthless without talent. This is the final straw for Hinata, as this pushed him to accept the academy's offer to experiment on him.

The Izuru Kamakura Project was explained in "Goodbye Despair" as well, with Junko Enoshima telling Hajime that he was turned into the Ultimate Hope during one of the academy's experiments.

Hajime, now known as Izuru Kamakura, was the person behind The Tragedy, also known as The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History.

The next episode of "Danganronpa" Despair Arc airs next Friday, August 5.
