The 10.1-inch display is assumed as a standard screen size for Android tablet. But Toshiba on Tuesday surprised the world with its 13-inch Excite tablet. Along with the monster-sized tablet, Toshiba also added two more tablets, one with 7.7-inch display and another with 10.1-inch display, to its lineup of Android tablets.
Toshiba Excite 13, being the biggest tablet produced yet, features 13-inch AutoBrite Backlit LED display with a resolution of 1600 X 900 pixels. The 16:9 aspect ratio is ideal for HD stuff like movies, videos and games. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass and supports multi-touch up to 10 fingers. The tablet boasts quad-core Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM. Excite 13 sports 5-megapixel rear camera and secondary 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chatting.
Toshiba Excite runs Android OS Ice Cream Sandwich out of the box. Excite 13 comes in two models with 32GB and 64GB of internal storage options. It also has full-sized SD card slot. As for connectivity features, Excite 13 packs Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB and micro HDMI slot. The tablet includes four stereo speakers with sound enhancements by SRS Labs.
Toshiba Excite is 0.4-inch thick and weighs 2.2 pounds. According to Toshiba, Excite 13 will give a talk time of up to 13 hours and stand by time up to 7 days. Excite 13 will go on sales from first week of June. The 32GB model is priced at $649, while 64GB model is priced at $749.
But do we really need such a big tablet? Excite 13 has a hefty price tag. Of course there are already tablets in the market with a similar price tag, but they are much lighter, durable and portable than Excite 13.
While some people say that Excite 13 is a risky bet from Toshiba, but we have seen this concept as a hit before. When Samsung announced Galaxy Note which packs a 5.3-inch display, it was doubted that this phone, or rather phablet, will fail to impress users. Galaxy Note does not easily fit in the pocket and critics wondered whether a phablet will a stylus will do well in the market. However, despite all the criticism, the device has surprised us with its sales (over 5 million units sold so far).
Toshiba's 13-inch Excite tablet is huge-sized but it also makes it stand apart from the crowd. So all the Japanese tech major has to do is keep its fingers crossed and hope that Excite 13 can emulate Galaxy Note's success.
