While Apple continues to keep its lips sealed in regards to the new iPhone, rumors are piling up in anticipation of an official unveiling. From specs to concept designs, and all the way to release date, the rumor mill churns incessantly, adding new leads almost daily.
Apple has not confirmed a release date for the highly-anticipated iPhone 5, but experts are increasingly looking to a June unveiling, more specifically on June 15 - the last day of Apple's 2012 WWDC.
WWDC Surprises
According to iPhone5NewsBlog, Apple may unveil its latest iPhone on the last day of its annual developers conference, the 2012 WWDC, which will run from June 11 through June 15. Apple is also expected to begin rolling out the iOS 6 platform on June 11, the first day of the WWDC. Several sources indicate that Apple has always released new platforms during its developers conferences, and this year the new-generation iPhone may join the launch party.
Rumor Round-up
On March 21, Reuters reported that Apple had ordered 4.6-inch displays for the iPhone 5, in preparation for a June launch. Reuters cited South Korean publication Maeli Business Newspaper, which in turn quoted an anonymous "industry source." Shortly after, another report from iMore's editor-in-chief Rene Ritchie pointed to a 3.5-inch screen and an October release date. Meanwhile, 9to5Mac cited an unnamed source claiming that Foxconn prototypes indicate that Apple will make the iPhone 5 display at least 4-inch. These, however, are all rumors, and no release date or specs have been confirmed.
"We heard from Reuters that 4.6-inch displays are being manufactured for the iPhone 5 in Korea in preparation for a June launch. We've also heard that Foxconn is flash-hiring 20,000 workers at the plant that would primarily focus on assembling the iPhone 5. Most recently, we heard about Texas Instruments working on tons of power management chips for the iPhone 5 as well," wrote iPhone5NewsBlog's Michael Nace. "These little production rumors are hopefully leaving a breadcrumb trail for us to follow towards a June 15th release date."
Rumored Specs
When it comes to specs, the next-generation iPhone is expected to feature a larger screen with improved Retina display and Gorilla Glass 2 protection, quad-core processor, an upgraded version of Apple's popular voice-assistant Siri, 4G LTE and NFC capabilities, a more efficient battery, Waterproof Nanotech Coating, updated iOS and more.
