LG will launch a six-inch display next month that can bend up to 40 degrees. At the same size as the Amazon Kindle, LG threatens to change the e-Reader and tablet industries forever.
Pitched as an e-Reader, the display has a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, though it doesn't offer color or animations. LG say it is highly durable, which is important if the display is to gain attention.
"E-Book users have longed expressed a desire for more durable EPD, since around 10% of them have damaged their product screens from accidentally dropping or hitting them. When LG Display's plastic EPD was put through repeated drop tests, from 1.5m above the ground or the average height of reading when standing, no damage resulted," the press release reveals. The display was also put through break and scratch tests, in which the display was struck with a hammer. Amazingly, there was no damage.
While comparable in size to the Amazon Kindle, the display is about a third thinner - coming in at 0.7mm - and half the weight, because it is made of plastic, at 14g. While it's not possible to fold or roll the display, it can be bent up to 40 degrees.
"LG Display has once again proven its reputation for leadership and innovation with a product we believe will help greatly popularize the E-Book market," Sang Duck Yeo, Head of Operations for LG Display's Mobile/OLED division, said in the press release.
LG says the introduction of these types of displays will drive prices down, and increase the quality of devices.
"[W]ith the introduction of plastic EPD, E-Books will be able to offer certain unique benefits compared to smart devices and tablets, including reduced eye fatigue and more efficient electricity consumption in addition to lower price," it says in the press release.
"Because of their flexibility and long battery life, the screens could be used for advertising or for in-store displays in areas where a normal screen is not practical," The Telegraph suggests.
Before hitting Europe next month, OEM companies in China will get the display.
Meanwhile, Amazon has also confirmed that the Kindle Touch will be arriving in the UK at the end of this month. During the build-up to Christmas last year, Amazon sold four million Kindles. The company hopes the UK will buy into the device, too.
