Critically acclaimed first-person shooter, Painkiller, is now available for download on Google Play and the Amazon AppStore. The game costs just over $1, or £0.70.

In a press release, Machineworks has confirmed that their FPS title Painkiller - called Painkiller: Purgatory - is coming to Android devices. The developer previously brought Duke Nukem to mobile; the first title launched in 2004.

"Machineworks was voted "Best Mobile 3D studio", won numerous Editor's choices and "Best Mobile Game of the Year" awards, including CNET's "10 best mobile games ever made". Entrepreneur magazine said Machineworks was "one of the 100 brilliant companies to watch". Machineworks also designed the critically acclaimed Prey and Duke Nukem Mobile mobile lines of games and ... Guitar Hero Mobile 3 and 4," the press releases said.

The title promises to bring everything that the original, and its expansions, had that caused it to be a success. The game includes the original soundtrack, weapons with alternate fire modes and its dark atmosphere.

"Trapped in a dark and unwelcoming world, awaiting purification for your earthly sins, you must fight through an endless number of enemy warriors as you attempt to stop the imminent Unholy War and attempt to overthrow Lucifer," the press release adds.

The original Painkiller was released back in 2004 for PC, developed by People Can Fly (now part of Epic Games, who holds a majority stake). The original was well received, being praised for its level design and art style. GameSpot said that the levels were varied, with a variety of settings, while the graphics engine was also praised by GameSpy. IGN criticised the level design, however, calling some levels repetitive

Support for the game has been long-running, with five expansions released and another - Painkiller: Recurring Evil - coming this year. One expansion, Painkiller: Hell Wars, was released on the original Xbox in 2006 and is a collection of the best levels from the original Painkiller and the Battle Out of Hell expansion.

Later expansions began as mods, being picked up and published by DreamCatcher. In 2011, Painkiller: Redemption featured a heavy metal soundtrack and six levels with over 6000 enemies. The expansion supports co-op and multiplayer, though there are no new maps.

Android version 2.3.3 - Gingerbread - is needed to run the title, which should support all recent Android devices, coming in at 64.78 megabytes.
