Square Enix released its adventure game "Rise of the Tomb Raider" as a timed exclusive on the Xbox consoles. It was meant to come out on the Playstation 4 this year, but has the game company finally abandoned the platform?
The game publisher giant has been keeping quiet about the release date of the PS4 port of "Rise of the Tomb Raider." Fans who were expecting a release date announcement at the recently concluded Electronic Entertainment Expo were ultimately left hanging.
The timed exclusivity of "Rise of the Tomb Raider" for Microsoft platforms was very disappointing for the PS4 fanbase, and has put Square Enix in a bad light.
GameRant reported that the fans were confused as to why Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix chose Microsoft over Sony, despite the latter's successful console sales during that time.
In a separate report by Polygon, Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher addressed the confusion and said that the PS4 version will come during the Holiday season this year.
Segment Next pointed out that the fanbase has been waiting for Lara Croft to come home to the PS4 for a long time now, with the Xbox versions released in November last year. If the holiday release date is proven to be true, then that puts the PS4 players more than a year behind their Xbox counterparts.
The game news site reported that the hype for the "Tomb Raider" reboot has waned, and Square Enix has already lost a substantial part of the sales it could have made if the PS4 version was released alongside the Xbox one.
The PC version of the game, on the other hand, was released early 2016, still as part of the Microsoft timed exclusivity clause.
NeoGAF forumers have speculated as to why Square Enix opted for a one year timed exclusivity for Microsoft, despite the potential loss of sales and interest for the PS4 port.
In a NeoGAF forum thread, users have pointed at the possibility that Square Enix does not want the release of "Rise of the Tomb Raider" to coincide with its other similarly themed PS4-exclusive action adventure game, "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."
"My guy said [Square Enix] didn't mind this as the delay meant it avoided [Uncharted 4's] release," forumer AnthonypUK revealed.
"Rise of the Tomb Raider" has clearly left the interest of a lot of people a long time ago. Should Square Enix still intend to release the game, it might be too late already,
As far as "Rise of the Tomb Raider" is concerned, no one knows what Square Enix's next move is.
