For video game fans looking for something different, Square Enix Collective presents "Moonlighter," an interesting mix of RPG-style gameplay and shop management simulation.
The game follows the life of Will, a normal shopkeeper in Rynoka who dreams of becoming a hero someday. His dreams were put on hold as he needs to take care of the shop. However, he also needs to venture into different dungeons and defeat countless enemies to keep his shop well-stocked and his customers happy. He might not be a full-time hero, but he is pretty close to being one.
"Moonlighter," developed by indie game studio Digital Sun, is a rogue-lite game combined with shopkeeping elements. Will needs to travel through generated dungeons to collect loot from monsters, and will need to either keep it for himself or sell it at the shop for profit. The dungeon crawling is reminiscent of the old-school versions of "The Legend of Zelda"
The Square Enix Collective helps small indie video game studios get a head start by featuring them on their site for 28 days. Fans would then decide whether or not it deserves to be funded, and if the campaign is successful, Square Enix will personally lend its support to the developers. Digital Sun, which is a small team of seven people, was given this chance three months ago, and 95 percent voted to back the project up for crowdfunding.
Square Enix Collective's Head Phil Elliot called the "Moonlighter" campaign the strongest they've ever had.
With Square Enix's blessing, "Moonlighter" has launched its Kickstarter campaign on May 31. The developers have reached its goal of $40,000 in only 51 hours, and is now working on their stretch targets, including special thematic armor and weapon sets per realm.
The game will be available on Steam and Humble Store for PC, Mac and Linux, and is aiming to launch it in March 2017. The console versions (PS4 and Xbox One) will be distributed via digital stores shortly afterwards.
