Google's health and medicine venture is getting a new name. The once called Google Life Sciences will now be called "Verily." The word dates back to the 13th century Middle English and has since fallen out of everyone's common vocabulary. It means truly or certainly and can now be only seen on old texts and books.

The Google Life Sciences research division was originally a part of the Google X launched in 2012 to create the smart contact lenses. Then went on to become its own independent division under Alphabet in August when the umbrella organization was finally introduced into the public. It has steadily grown and now has a larger vision and a new name.

Google Life Sciences or shall we dare say Verily CEO, Andy Conrad, says that the word or name is aspirational. It's only through the truth that we are going to defeat Nature he says. He further adds that Verily's focus will be a shift from conventional medical technologies, from intervention to prevention, and/or from reactive to proactive.

Verily defines their mission as bringing together life sciences and technology to uncover new information or truths regarding health and disease. It also aims to have diseases detected earlier, understand it better and intervene more precisely during the course of a certain disease.

The research division of Google is made up of four core sectors which are the hardware, software, clinical, and science parts. All teams are combining their research tools with industry partnerships and technical expertise to begin new studies, start companies, and develop new technologies.

Each part or team works on specific areas. For the hardware division, they focus on building smaller and more powerful health tools and devices. For now they are working on the smart contact lens project, which creates lenses with embedded glucose sensors so diabetics can measure the glucose in tear.

The software sector is working to create products and algorithms to analyze health data and identify patterns that can diagnose a disease. The clinical team on the other hand, partners with hospitals; medical societies, government and other industry groups to apply technology to research on health and disease. They also work alongside the hardware and software sections to inform Verily product development in ensuring that their work is addressing medical needs.

Last but not the least, Verily's science team is the one that conducts research to better understand how conditions like heart diseases, diabetes and cancer progress.

It could be observed that the tech giant has been exploring within the health area for some time now. This year alone under Google Life Science they have built an experimental wristband that was used to tract health data in clinical trials and drug tests. And just this March they have announced that they are collaborating with Johnson & Johnson to develop robots for assisting surgeons.
