Google has announced today that they exploring the possibilities of having an expansion of the tech company's Fiber. Fiber, the search engine's super-fast internet service says that they are exploring the two metropolitan cities, Chicago and LA.
The tech giant's Fiber Team said in their announcement that they are inviting both Chicago and Los Angeles to explore the option of bringing the service to their cities. They also said that as they have explored bringing Fiber to other metros within the US, they have worked to refine their checklist and has prepared for building their network in different places.
According to the team, they are now ready to use the same process they have employed before to work in these two biggest cities of the country. Chicago and L.A. would be two of the largest metros that the team has engaged with. The team also says that with the help of their internet, these cities can boost their creative cultures with an internet speed that would match their size.
Google Fiber, as of now, is available in three metro areas which are Kansas City; Provo, Utah; and Austin, Texas. There are currently 17 metro areas that have a good chance of getting the search engine's $70 USD per month gigabit internet service. Google said that the plan will definitely build in six of these areas.
The tech company said that the remaining 11 areas, which include Chicago and LA, will have to do some work before Google can promise anything. They said on their announcement that as they do their usual checklist process, they have to work closely with each city's leaders to collect detailed information about each of their areas.
The tech giant says that they will need to study all the different factors that might affect construction like the topography and infrastructures in the area; and use the information gathered to help them prepare to build a local fiber network. Google can't promise that they will really bring Fiber to Chicago and LA as this would be a big step for each city and also there are many factors to consider first.
In related news, Google Fiber is seen to be not fast enough in terms of expanding as their competitor AT&T's GigaPower fiber service. Just yesterday, the said company launched their fiber service in parts of LA and West Palm Beach and notably has already made it available in Chicago.
The said service of AT&T is also available in 20 metro areas nationwide. They have also announced that they have plans to bring their service to 36 other metro areas and make it available to more than 14 million homes and small businesses within four years.
Interestingly enough both AT&T and Google haven't mentioned any plans or information on how many homes and/or businesses can avail of their services.
