It wasn't too long ago when iPhone owners were subjected to the frightening possibility of their device bending if they leave it at the back pocket of their tight fitting jeans. When iPhone 6 was released last September, Apple came under fire from users who demanded an explanation regarding the problem. The company insisted that the bending was isolated to nine units but some sites collated all the claims and insist that there were 150.

It was a publicity nightmare for Apple and it was a real problem for users who couldn't get a replacement from their retail stores. During the bendgate issue, a lot of the retailers considered the problem an internet hoax and refused customers when they tried to get a replacement. Videos of users bending their phones is enough to send a shiver down your spine and if you did believe that the bending issue is real, you might get a little vindication today.

A video from Unbox Therapy shows that the next iPhone will be significantly thicker to avoid the bending issue. The difference in size, mass, and a rumored stronger aluminum, is reportedly enough to counter bending forces that might alter the phone's shape. The fact that Apple took the time to address this issue might suggest that the bendgate incident was more serious than Apple cared to admit last year. Then again, it just might be a pre-emptive move to make sure issues like that never happen again.

Tech rumors suggest that the new iPhone units will be released this September, similar to the release format of last year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Bending or not, you can be sure that the queue to purchase the latest unit will be as ridiculous as the previous ones. Amidst the new iPhone rumor craze, Verizon also announced that it will no longer subsidize smartphone costs. This means that new subscribers will have to pay the cost of the unit up front or via monthly installments. How bad will this affect iPhone sales? We'll have to wait just a little longer to find out.
