Twitter has two new features to show off - private group messages and the ability to shoot, edit and post videos straight through the app.

This move follows a rather bumpy first year as a publicly traded company, and Twitter likely aims to reassure its investors regarding the growth prospects of the company.

Twitter has been teasing new features for a few months now, and two of the new goodies are now finally out of the bag, so here's the deal.

Private group messages

"Private conversations on Twitter are a great complement to the largely public experience on the platform. You might prefer to read (or watch) Tweets but converse about them privately. You might want to continue a public conversation privately with a smaller group, or start one based on a Tweet you saw. Many of you use Direct Messages to reach the people and brands you've only connected to on Twitter. Whatever the case may be, the ability to converse privately with groups gives you more options for how and with whom you communicate on Twitter," the company explains in a new announcement on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Through this new group function, users will be able to start conversations with any of their followers, without all of them needing to follow one another in order to participate to the group conversation. Users will receive a notification when they're added to a group, and will be able to easily start a new group conversation themselves at any time.

Native Video Tools

"Tweets have been more than 140 characters for some time. The Twitter you experience today is rich and immersive, full of images, gifs, Vines, audio files and videos from some of the world's most recognizable figures and brands. And starting today, everyone will soon be able to seamlessly capture, edit and share videos right from the Twitter app, too," further touts the announcement.

"We designed our camera to be simple to use so you can capture and share life's most interesting moments as they happen. In just a few taps you can add a video to unfolding conversations, share your perspective of a life event, and show your everyday moments instantly, without ever having to leave the app. Viewing and playing videos is just as simple: videos are previewed with a thumbnail and you can play them with just one tap."

With native video tools now finally baked in directly into the Twitter app, users will be able to add video to any tweet with just a few taps. Once they send the video they want, others will be able to play it with just a single tap. Twitter videos can be as long as 30 seconds.
