Motorola's popular Moto 360 smartwatch running Android Wear could get Moto Maker customization options this year, a company executive reckoned.
The Moto 360 is one of the most popular smartwatches currently available on the market, and one of the key factors contributing to its appeal is the design. While the gadget comes with the array of advanced functionality expected for a smartwatch, its classic design and its round-shaped form factor are drew attention, as the Moto 360 is considered more attractive than other rectangular-shaped smartwatches out there.
Motorola has also seen great success with its Moto X smartphones (both 2013 and 2014), as they come with unprecedented customization options via the company's Moto Maker tool. Moto Maker allows customers to design their device to better suit their tastes, choosing colors, accents, engravings, and other.
As it turns out, Moto Maker support for the Moto 360 smartwatch could be in the cards as well. During a recent interview, CNET asked Motorola COO Rick Osterloh whether Moto Maker will be available for wearables and the Moto 360 this year, and the executive's response was "could be."
"We have no major announcements in this area, but I think your intuition is very good," Osterloh told CNET.
In other words, the company is not yet ready to make an official announcement in this regards, but it seems that Motorola may be gearing up to add Moto Maker support for its popular Moto 360 smartwatch. This could mean that users will be able to choose the color of the device, and perhaps personalize it with engravings on the rear or such.
The Moto 360 currently comes in three color options: stone leather, black leather, and light metal. If Motorola adds customization options through Moto Maker, users might be able to make the smartwatch more colorful by choosing a different hue for each individual component, for instance.
As a reminder, the Moto 360 was one of the first smartwatches to launch with Google's Android Wear OS on board. The device sports a 1.56-inch LCD display with a resolution of 320 x 290 pixels and a TI OMAP 3 processor under the hood, paired with 512MB of RAM. Other key specs include 4GB of internal storage capacity and a 320 mAh battery.
As previously mentioned, the Moto 360 proved to be widely popular among consumers, and the addition of Moto Maker support would most likely make it more appealing to a wider audience. Until Motorola announces some specific plans in this regards, however, it remains in the "could be" state.
