The much-rumored Samsung Galaxy S5 Active is now official, as AT&T has already started offering the extra rugged smartphone online and in its stores.

The official announcement now comes to confirm not only the existence of this rumored Galaxy S5 version, but also its full specifications and features. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Active comes with a 5.1-inch full HD 1080p AMOLED display, exactly as the original flagship. Under the hood, the rugged handset packs a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, paired with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage capacity, with a microSD card slot for additional memory of up to 128GB.

Other specs include a 16-megapixel rear shooter, as well as the much-touted heart-rate sensor, which is bound to be a key feature for active users.

"As summer begins to hit its stride, you need a phone that can handle the elements. Engineered to keep up with your active lifestyle, AT&T and Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile) announce the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active, the next step of the popular Galaxy S5 designed to withstand the bumps and bruises of everyday life," AT&T touts in a new press release on Friday, May 30.

The real difference between this new model and the original Galaxy S5 consists of ruggedness, as the Active model has an extra layer of toughness. The Galaxy S5 already has IP67 dust- and water-resistance certification, but its more rugged counterpart adds some extra oomph by boasting MIL-STA 810G, i.e. the latest version of the military standard for shock-resistant devices.

"Samsung Galaxy S 5 Active is built to handle the wear and tear of an active lifestyle, while still maintaining the level of performance customers expect from a premium smartphone," adds AT&T senior vice president of Devices, Jeff Bradley. "Now you can enjoy the outdoors with a durable, premium smartphone on the nation's most reliable 4G LTE network."

In terms of software changes, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active adds the previously-leaked Active Zone app, which combines all of the activity and health-related apps and features the smartphone has to offer. Moreover, the handset also comes with a built-in barometer.

When it comes to pricing, AT&T revealed that it will offer the no-contract Samsung Galaxy S5 Active for a quite hefty $714.99, a notably higher price tag compared to the Galaxy S5's $649 price off-contract. The smartphone is also available for $27.50 per month with AT&T Next 18, $35.75 per month with AT&T Next 12, or $199 with a two-year contract. To sweeten the deal, AT&T is also slashing $50 off the Samsung Gear Fit for those who purchase a Galaxy S5 Active.
