AMD RX 490 Vega vs NVIDIA GTX 1080: Will The Upcoming Card Kill The Competition?
C. de LacyThe AMD Radeon RX 490 is about to be released soon, but will it be the GPU that ATI fans have been waiting for as an answer to Nvidia's GTX 1080 power house?
With the recent sighting of the potential RX 490 under the monicker "Vega," there seems to be some competition starting to boil up as Nvidia's GTX 1080 might be soon finding its match. Reports from PCGamesN.com indicates that the upcoming high-end GPU from AMD, which people tentatively call RX 490, will be this close to actually beating GTX 1080.
Fortunately for those who have been waiting for an actual test run of the upcoming GPU, AMD held a closed door press event, which showcased the power of the AMD Vega. Though visible in limited countries, YouTube user named "Tekknological" posted a video of "DOOM" running in 4K at a solid 60 frames per second gameplay.
"DOOM" runs on Vulkan API and in this particular setup, a strong indication shows that the AMD Vega GPU could beat Nvidia's GTX 1080. There's a good chance that the AMD Vega will also be announced at the New Horizon event, which will highlight the "Zen" CPU.
While there aren't any official figures yet, rumors and hearsay suggest that the AMD Vega or RX 490 will be having an 8GB and 16GB variant with a memory bandwidth of up to 512GB per second. It is also believed that it will capable of delivering 24 teraflops for precision performance and half of that for the the single-precision compute.
Some rumors also suggest that AMD might be planning on releasing the Vega GPU for the Mac and MacBook Pro lineup, which may sound a bit extravagant, but still slightly possible. If anything, this will boost Apple's line of laptop models though fans of the brand might need to hope for better game support afterwards.
Stay tuned for more news on AMD Vega RX 490.
