Toshiba has yet to make its mark on the highly-competitive tablet market, but its new trio of 10-inch Android tablets definitely looks promising.
The company just unveiled three new additions to its Excite lineup, trying to cater to three main sectors: the low-end segment is a job for the new Toshiba Excite Pure, the gaming area is for the Excite Pro, while the Excite Write tablet raises the stakes with high-end specs and an intriguing combination of a digitizer and stylus.
The three tablets look roughly similar at a first glance, but promise to differentiate themselves in terms of specs, price and target audience.
"With more and more consumers adopting tablets as their go-to devices for entertainment and travel, we wanted to push the boundaries even further and equip our new Excite tablets with the technology and features needed to maximize the potential of these devices," Carl Pinto, vice president of marketing at Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division, explains in the press release. "By focusing on boosting the capabilities of the screen - from increasing the resolution to adding a digitizer option - we're also evolving the way consumers can use these devices from consumption to creation."
Toshiba Excite Pure
As previously mentioned, this new Android tablet is aimed at the low-end segment of the market. As expected, it packs decent specs, but not exactly high-end. The slate uses the slightly older Tegra 3 processor with 1GB of RAM, while the 10.1-inch display has a 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution. It has 16GB of internal storage and a micro SD card slot for expandable memory, a 1.2-megapixel front shooter no rear camera. The Excite Pure does, however, rock the latest Android 4.2 Jelly Bean right out of the box, which is fairly impressive considering its $299 price tag. There's always room for criticism, but $299 for a ten-incher is as budget-friendly as it gets. It's also worth mentioning that the "Pure" comes from the pure Android experience this slate has to offer, i.e. no custom Toshiba skins shoved dow consumers' throat.
Toshiba Excite Pro
The higher-end Toshiba Excite Pro is in fact very similar to the Excite Write, but a few things do make a notable difference. The Pro sports the same-size display, 10.1 inches, but this time Toshiba slapped a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels more densely packed at 300 pixels per inch (ppi). This model also boasts an upgrade in terms of processing power with an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor. It has 32GB of internal storage and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean running the show. The price for this slate goes up to $499.
Toshiba Excite Write
The last tablet of the trio, the Toshiba Excite Write, is nearly identical to the Excite Pro. It has the same 10.1-inch display with a 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor under the hood, running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The big difference, however, consists of a Galaxy Note-like Wacom digitizer. The Toshiba Excite Write includes a stylus that will reportedly work on no other device, despite the very close resemblance to the Excite Pro. The Toshiba Excite Write will retail for $599 and will likely give the Galaxy Note 10.1 a run for its money.
All tablets are slated to ship in late June, which means the Excite Pro and Excite Write will be among the first wave of Tegra 4-powered machines.
