Smartphones have become incredibly powerful, yet Honor envisions them going further by proactively assisting users without explicit commands.

Recently introduced in China, Honor's latest mobile software, Magic OS 8.0, claims to embody intelligent AI magic, branding it as the "world's first intent-based UI (IUI)."

This implies a system where the phone anticipates user needs without explicit instructions. While it may seem futuristic, Honor aims to bring this innovative approach to user interaction, reducing the need for constant manual input. Magic OS 8.0 could significantly shift how smartphones perceive and respond to user intentions, streamlining and enhancing the overall user experience.

Understanding Intent-Based User Interface

An intent-based user interface (IUI) software system uses artificial intelligence (AI) to decipher and understand human intents. This system enables the device to perform proactive functions without waiting for explicit directions.

This novel method of interacting between people and technology is unveiled in Honor's Magic OS 8.0.

Powered by an undisclosed AI hardware chip, Magic OS 8.0 is designed to interpret language, images, gestures, and eye movements to grasp the user's intent and offer relevant services spontaneously. For example, if a user needs a new phone case, the IUI might present various options for the specific device.

This marks a departure from traditional interaction methods, where users typically initiate actions through text or touch interfaces. The introduction of Magic Portal further extends this concept, making the AI capabilities available across different devices, such as cars and smart speakers, for a seamless and intuitive user experience.

MagicOS 8.0 New Enhancements

Honor's latest software, MagicOS 8.0, is set to elevate user experience with innovative features and improved performance. Among its enhancements are customizable home screen options, faster UI responsiveness, and optimized resource utilization for a smoother operation.

MagicOS 8.0 introduces a novel shake-to-block ads functionality, providing users with a hassle-free browsing experience. Additionally, the update includes system-wide Parallel Spaces, enabling the simultaneous use of two instances of the same app.

Scheduled to premiere on the upcoming Honor Magic6 series, the public beta release is planned for several devices from January to May 2024. The rollout will encompass various devices, starting with flagship models like Honor Magic5 Ultimate Edition, showcasing Honor's commitment to delivering advanced software capabilities across its diverse product range.

During the Snapdragon Summit in October, Honor previewed AI features for the Honor Magic 6, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. These features included Honor's Yoyo assistant, which creates a slideshow video from device photos, and an eye-tracking feature for touchless control. While some features may be exclusive to new devices, MagicOS 8.0, based on Android 14, will debut on the Honor Magic6 series.

There's no information on its global release, but details are expected during MWC 2024 in late February or early March. Samsung is rumored to introduce AI features with the Galaxy S24, featuring Samsung Gauss for live translation, generative photo editing, AI wallpaper creation, and improved night zoom photography on January 17.
