The fresh iOS update was bringing support for that next-gen wireless charging thing to iPhone 13s and 14s. They announced that this iOS 17.2 update would let those phones work seamlessly with their fancy new Qi2 chargers.

Qi2 is a better version of regular wireless charging, using magnets to line your phone upright for quicker charging.

While the iPhone 15s already had it, this update was aimed to give iPhone 13s and 14s the same deal to make using Qi2 chargers easier. It's supposed to make wireless charging smoother sailing for people rocking those models.

What is Qi2 Wireless Charging?

The new Qi2 charging standard is a big step from the old way phones got power without plugging in.

The phone stays in the right spot with magnets, so Qi2 makes wireless charging more solid and handy. Apple worked with other companies to make this new standard, like their MagSafe, keeping it close to that setup.

While Qi2 says charging will get faster later on, it's big on securely charging phones without wires now, giving users a more accessible and more reliable experience than before. Like the last version, phones will stay powered up without waiting perfectly still.

Names of companies and products are left the same.

According to another source, Qi2, formed from the Magnetic Power Profile and Extended Power Profile (EPP) amalgamation, incorporates Apple's MagSafe tech, ensuring better alignment between chargers and devices for more efficient and faster wireless charging.

While Qi2 enables up to 15W charging for compatible devices, it's unclear if Apple's iPhones will leverage this speed, as they're specified to support up to 7.5W despite their Qi2 compatibility.

The upcoming holiday season will launch the first Qi2 accessories, promising improved energy efficiency and expanded wireless charging capabilities for various battery-powered devices.

Qi2 Support for iPhone 13, 14, But Some iPhones Are Not Supported

Anker, a well-known electronics company, may soon release gadgets that use the latest Qi charging standard. However, iPhone 12 users hoping to update to iOS 17.2 in a week or so might be let down.

Although the new OS version is bringing Journal and improved camera modes, it won't work with Qi2 due to issues inside phones.

Apple had told a news site that the new iPhone 15s could charge up to 15W using those wireless Qi2 chargers. But the company didn't say if phones like the iPhone 13 and 14 could do the same thing with those Qi2 chargers.

There is no direct statement from Apple about whether those older models will charge that fast on the Qi2 chargers, either.

Apple usually shows test versions before software drops. So, the real iOS 17.2 may launch shortly with changes like optimized charging in some vehicles, customized alert tones, plus fixes.

Rumors say spatial capture will come to iPhone 15 Pro, too.

However, current iPhones might lack what's needed to work with new wireless standards regardless of what else 17.2 offers. We'll have to wait and see if Anker gadgets work as planned once they arrive or if iPhone owners face troubles.
