Katherine Heigl returns to the small screen in the legal drama "Doubt." The pilot episode of the show featured great performances from Heigl and the rest of the cast, surprising critics with a solid premiere.
According to TV Line, in the pilot for "Doubt," Sadie Ellis (portrayed by Katherine Heigl, "Grey's Anatomy") has finally "found the man of her dreams." On paper, he seems like the perfect catch: he's "kind, he's smart, he's funny... he's apparently the first guy she's ever really felt like she could talk to." But he's also her client, and "he's about to go on trial for first-degree murder."
Sadie, together with "fellow litigator" Albert Cobb (Dulé Hill, "Psych"), works on Dr. Billy Brennan's (Steven Pasquale, "Rescue Me") case. Billy is a pediatric surgeon, and he is "awaiting trial for the 1991 murder of his high school sweetheart." The case has been reopened after a former classmate claims that Billy once confessed to murdering his girlfriend.
The murder instrument has also turned up, and it contains blood from both the victim and a blood type that matches Billy's. In a desperate attempt to "clear his name" and "prove his innocence to Sadie," Brennan agrees to provide a blood sample. He does so without consulting neither Sadie now Albert.
While Sadie's and Billy's feelings for each other grow stronger, Isaiah Roth (Elliot Gould, "Ray Donovan"), Sadie's boss, warns her about this blatant conflict of interest. Sadie visit's Billy's apartment, but the two end up kissing. Billy insists that he wants Sadie to defend him despite their budding and ill-advised romance.
The next day, Sadie visits her mother Carolyn (Judith Light, "Transparent"). Carolyn has been incarcerated for 34 years after she murdered a state trooper. Sadie loses her composure and cries, claiming that she needs Carolyn now since "she seems to be repeating her mother's mistakes."
It is then revealed that Carolyn once got involved with Isaiah, who was her lawyer. Sadie thinks that his "attachment" to Carolyn is the reason why her mother is still no ready to face a parole board.
Per Vulture, "Doubt" is a "solid showcase" for Heigl and the rest of the cast, such as Laverne Cox. Cox portrays "a trans lawyer on a prime-time CBS show in a role that acknowledges the character's sexual identity but also emphasizes that, like any woman, Cox's Cameron Wirth is a multidimensional human being who isn't defined solely by her orientation or gender."
