In the second episode of FX's "Legion," David Haller (Dan Stevens) leaves Clockworks Psychiatric Hospital and transfers to Summerland, the show's equivalent of Xavier's School for Gifter Youngsters. Stevens spills the beans on David's "daddy issues," and his connection to one of the most powerful mutants in the "X-Men" franchise.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, not all X-Men fans are aware that Professor X/ Charles Xavier had a son: "Legion's" David Haller. While the FX show hasn't revealed outright who David's father is, the second episode of "Legion" has touched on the subject of the character's daddy issues.
When asked about Dan Steven's thoughts on Summerland, the actor replied that David probably thinks "it's a step up" compared to Clockworks. The actor also talked about David's relationship with Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), and his experience taking drugs with Lenny (Aubry Plaza).
Stevens talked about how the restrictions affect David and Syd's relationship, and he shares, "When you make inherent obstructions in a storyline, like, these people are very much in love but they can never touch and one of them happens to be crazy... how does that play out? I think that's very interesting. It certainly became very interesting, the visual cues that they have to adopt to demonstrate something. We tried to find a genuine mental connection to the truth, which was quite fun."
In episode 2 of "Legion," viewers soon find out that David's father "studied stars" and that he never got to meet his dad because he died last year while David was in the hospital. However, in the comics, Professor X was his father, and Stevens shared that the show might follow the "story of David's father."
The actor shared, "It becomes a big issue for him, yeah, issues of provenance and where these issues may come from... I think it's always been a big question for him, and I think it becomes a big theme of the show."
During a separate interview with IGN, Stevens also talked about David's relationship with his as yet unnamed father, who has only been mentioned on the show so far. The actor added, "Well, identity becomes questioned. All of those questions and problems are thrown into the mix. And he realized something quite profound later in the series. And then there are some Easter eggs that are introduced that fans of the X-Men universe will definitely recognize."
Despite the fact that "Legion" takes place in an alternate continuity from the live-action X-Men movies, Stevens remains hopeful. He even teased IGN that he would "never say never" about either Patrick Stewart or James McAvoy (who both portray the old and younger version of Professor X, respectively) maybe one day appearing on "Legion."
