The upcoming film "Crazy Rich Asians" is based on the book of the same name written by Kevin Kwan. Based on recent reports, Constance Wu ("Fresh off the Boat") has been cast as Rachel Chu, the main character of "Crazy Rich Asians."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the upcoming film will be directed by Jon M. Chu. "Crazy Rich Asians" will also feature "an all-Asian cast." The screenplay will be penned by Peter Chiarelli ("The Proposal") and Adele Lim (the "Lethal Weapon" TV show).
Like the book it is based on, the film will revolve around "the lives of wealthy Chinese families living in Singapore." Wu will portray Rachel, "an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick's hometown of Singapore for his best friend's wedding. Before long, his secret is out: Nick is from a family that is impossibly wealthy, he's perhaps the most eligible bachelor in Asia and every single woman in his ultra-rarefied social class is incredibly jealous of Rachel and wants to bring her down."
Although the "Crazy Rich Asians" film hasn't been officially greenlit yet, several sources say that it is "on the development fast track." Color Force's Nina Jacobson and partner Brad Simpson joined the project back in 2013 when Kevin Kwan's book of the same name was still in the manuscript stage. Ivanhoe president John Penotti will also produce, while Kevin Kwan will serve as executive producer along with Ivanhoe chairman Robert Friedland, per Variety.
Wu currently plays Jessica Huang, the mother of three children and the wife of Randall Park's character in "Fresh Off the Boat," an ABC comedy. Wu will also be part of the upcoming Hulu show"Dimension 404." The A.V. Club has revealed that Jessica from "Fresh Off the Boat" was Wu's breakout role and that the actress is "also known as an outspoken critic of the way Asian-American and feminist issues are handled in Hollywood films."
