It looks like Amblin Entertainment wants a piece of the assassin pie. Recent reports have revealed that Steven Spielberg's company has picked up the script for "Ruthless," a project that is being described as being about a "female John Wick."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brad Peyton ("San Andreas," "Rampage") will be directing "Ruthless," while Tripp Vinson and Liz Harris will produce the film. Peyton will also produce "Ruthless" together with Jeff Fierson via ASAP Entertainment.

The upcoming film will feature a retired assassin who "returns to the game" after she is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. The assassin must then take on "one last job to provide for her daughter."

The official synopsis for "Ruthless" reads, "When a legendary retired assassin is diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, she must return to the life she left behind and complete one final job in order to secure a future for her young daughter. There are twists along the way," per Geeky Tyrant. The script for the upcoming film was penned by John Swetnam ("Into the Storm," "Step Up: All In").

Amblin picked up "Ruthless" after Lionsgate's "John Wick: Chapter 2" opened last weekend. The sequel, which starred Keanu Reeves who reprised his role as the assassin John Wick, took in a whopping $30.4 million. "John Wick: Chapter 2" has grossed at least $50 million worldwide to date.

The role of the female assassin hasn't been cast yet, but "Ruthless" could allegedly be casting an A-list actress. There are also "claims that "several A-list actresses" have read the script and are vying to land the lead."

While the concept of a female assassin in a lead role is not exactly breaking the mold (bringing to mind Luc Besson's 1990 film "La Femme Nikita"), Reeve's comeback in "John Wick" "was rooted in the film's artful balance of irreverence, darkness and spectacle." The film "John Wick" also successfully achieved "that balance on the back of a reasonable budget," which simplified "profit margins."
