Anonymous, the infamous hacker group has attacked the servers of Freedom Hosting II that affected around 10,000 Tor-based websites according to a report by Mobipicker. The reason for the attack was due to the contents of the websites, child pornography.
Freedom Hosting II hosts a number of websites on the "Dark Web," which is the web content that exists on darknets. The darknets, establishes peer-to-peer networks as well as popular ones such as I2P, Freenet and Tor. These are operated by individual and public organizations. The Dark Web is often associated with all sorts of criminal activities including online drug market Silk Road.
The hacker got access to gigabytes of data. Users who visited the affected websites were prompted with the message, "Hello, Freedom Hosting II, you have been hacked." A Dark Web researcher named Sarah Jamie Lewis stated that Freedom Hosting II consists up to 20% of all sites on the Dark Web.
The group claimed responsibility for the hack and explained that Freedom Hosting II is hosting child pornography websites. The hacker claimed they found 30 GB of data that contains child pornography. "This is in fact my first hack ever. Initially I didn't want to take down FH2, just look through it," the group stated.
It was reported that Freedom Hosting II only has a 256MB of quota per site but was using gigabytes of data instead that lead to suspicion. "This suggests they paid for hosting and the admin knew of those sites." That is when they decided to take down the websites, the hacker explained.
The hacker group also claimed that they released a dump of system files from the servers. However, the group made no plans to distribute the data due to its pornographic contents.
