Treyarch is looking to November with the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Nintendo's Wii U console, perhaps releasing during a similar period, could host Black Ops 2, according to a QA tester's LinkedIn profile.
"QA tester for Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. Duties include QA testing on PS3 and Wii U, multiplayer testing while collaborating with team, ad hoc testing, and regression," a resume entry on Randhall H.'s LinkedIn profile revealed. Only first and second tier connections on LinkedIn can see the user's full name.
Multiplayer testing is probably an important task at Treyarch, considering the series' consistency in record-breaking sales. Treyarch is introducing a host of new weapons and gadgets for the near-future 2025 setting, though balance of weapons is probably a chief consideration. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and 3 received criticism for lack of balance, and a section of fans saw Call of Duty: Black Ops as a balanced multiplayer experience.
Nintendo's Call of Duty titles previously have not been on par with the HD counterparts, possible due to the Wii's weaker hardware. Wii U brings high-definition graphics and performance on par with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so the experience of Black Ops 2 on Wii U could be similar. Ubisoft and Gearbox Software have said that Assassin's Creed 3 and Aliens: Colonial Marines' Wii U versions are better-looking on Wii U than on console and PC, respectively.
Nintendo said that it wants to attract third-party developers to Wii U, so Call of Duty seems like a solid starting point. While Wii U's launch lineup looks strong, it heavily features titles released in 2011. Microsoft gets timed third-party exclusives -- Skyrim's Dawnguard DLC or Call of Duty map packs, for example -- while Sony boasts a strong range of first-party titles including Uncharted and Gran Turismo. It seems that Nintendo is trying to combine the two approaches, so consumers could be interested to see if Nintendo can capitalize on a year's head-start over Microsoft and Sony.
