The world's most popular social networking Web site, Facebook, launches its first real-cash app 'Bingo Friendzy.' Will the new app increase the ever-growing list of Facebook fans even more?
Launched in 2004, Facebook is currently the most visited social networking site in the world. Since, its launch less than a decade ago, there has been no looking back for the company and the number of active users have increased to over 900 million.
Apart from linking its users to their friends, features like online gaming and online shopping are also on offer for the users. With hundreds of games to choose from, will 'Bingo Frenzy' just become a part of its app list?
'Bingo Friendzy,' developed by Gamesys, will allow the users to play on Facebook with real money. It will include 90 different slot and bingo games.
"People love playing new types of games with their friends on Facebook and real money gaming is a popular leisure activity in the UK," said Julien Codorniou, Facebook's head of gaming for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The new app will be made available only to its UK users who are over 18 years.
With the launch of 'Bingo Friendzy' is it possible that Facebook is testing the waters? If successful, will Facebook come up with more gambling apps in the UK? Furthermore, if effective in the UK, is there enough scope for Facebook to provide gambling apps to users in countries where online gambling is permitted? Countries like the U.S. have stringent laws for gambling and Facebook's corporate office is based in Palo Alto, California. Is it possible that the world's most popular Web site will get some sort of gambling introduced to its U.S. users also?
Criticism already dogs online gambling, with many countries blocking online gambling Web sites. Will these countries grant Facebook access under the social networking site pretext, or will it be deemed as an online gambling site and blocked?
With the boom in the online gambling industry, it seems that Facebook has dived deep into the gambling industry. In the long run, it remains to be seen if Facebook can keep pace with the gambling industry bigwigs.
