Despite the $165 million spent in an effort to market the crossover movie "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" and amassing an estimated $800 million in box office revenues, the film was still considered a failure for not making at least $1 billion. It also looks like "Batman V Superman" will headline The Golden Raspberry Awards (Razzies) after it garnered a whopping eight nominations for different categories.
"Batman V Superman" was released on March 25, 2016 and starred Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. The film's plot involved Bruce viewing Superman as a possible threat to humanity because of his inhuman abilities. Meanwhile, Lex takes advantage of Bruce's distrust to pit Batman against his archenemy, Superman.
According to io9, The Golden Raspberry Awards has already revealed 2017's nominations shortlist. However, this isn't the final list of nominees, which will be announced on Jan. 23.
While movies based on comic books are constantly represented in the Razzies, it is possible that 2017 will be the year that sci-fi, superheroes, and video games dominate the Razzies. Last year's Worst Picture winner was "Fantastic Four."
This year's contenders also includes "The Divergent Series: Allegiant" with six nominations while "Assasin's Creed" has five. "Suicide Squad" has two nominations, one of which is for Jared Leto as Worst Supporting Actor. "Ghostbusters" is up for Worst Screenplay.
Movie Web has revealed that voting for the Razzies top picks as the year's worst movies will close on Monday, Jan. 16. Other nominees were also revealed in a video from YouTube user "truthhopelove."
Batman v Superman is on the Razzie nominations short list in the Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel category, along with Worst Screenplay, Worst Supporting Actor (Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg), Worst Director (Zack Snyder), Worst Actor (Ben Affleck) and Worst Picture. The only two awards it isn't in contention for are Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress, which makes sense since Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman was one of the most beloved aspects of the divisive movie.
"Batman v Superman" is on the Razzie nominations short list for the following categories: Worst Prequel, Remake, Ripoff or Sequel category and along with Worst Screenplay. The movie featuring a Batman and Superman teamup was also nominated for Worst Supporting Actor (Jeremy Irons and Jesse Eisenberg), Worst Director (Zack Snyder), Worst Actor (Ben Affleck) and Worst Picture.
"Batman v Superman" wasn't nominated for Worst Actress and Worst Supporting Actress. Which comes as no surprise since both critics and viewers alike usually pointed out Gal Gadot's show-stealing performance as Diana more than made up for the rest of the film.
