The shooting rage at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport left many injured and five dead. However, a 37-year-old man unbelievably survived the shooting as his life was saved by the unusual hero, the MacBook Pro.
26-year-old Estaban Santiago took off his gun from his checked-in luggage and unexpectedly opened fire on innocent people who were getting their luggage from the baggage area of the Fort Lauderdale airport on Friday, Jan. 6. Santiago had wounded eight people and killed another five. He was then later arrested.
Although this horrifying incident happened, Steve Frappier managed to miraculously avoid injury and death --- all thanks to his Apple laptop that protected him from the bullet. Frappier was going to Atlanta to join an educational conference. He was carrying his school-issued laptop in his backpack not knowing how it would be his lifesaver during his trip.
Frappier recalled on how passengers were caught off-guard when the shooting began and it has left a deep impact on him. According to reports, a total of 13 people were shot even before they could get out of the baggage counter. As per Frappier's interview with CNN, he revealed that he was wearing a backpack on both of his shoulders and when he went to the floor and dropped, the backpack was still on his back.
Frappier was an unwanted target as the bullets had started flying in the air. The gunman had set his shoulders as the target but the bullet missed its mark.
Though he had no idea what has transpired that time, he felt something hit his back. He sneaked over to the men's rest room as soon as the firing was over and removed his backpack, shocking to see a 9mm bullet stuck into his laptop bag.
Investigators had a conclusion that the bullet probably passed thru a slight opening. It first hit the MacBook Pro's display, then made its way thru the aluminum chassis and battery of the said laptop.
Then, it finally exited by the side intake vents of the laptop. Frappier recognizes that the backpack, eventually the MacBook Pro saved him and giving him a second life.
