After hearing about gospel singer Kim Burrell's homophobic comments, Ellen DeGeneres took to Twitter to announce that the former's performance on The Ellen Show has been canceled. Burrell's words have clearly touched a nerve.
DeGeneres, an accomplished actress, comedian, producer, television host and writer, came out as a lesbian in 1997 and is currently married to actress Portia de Rossi. DeGeneres is also a vocal supporter of LGBT rights.
According to the Associated Press, Burrell can be heard saying that "the perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion... has deceived many men and women" in a video that circulated online in the last week of December 2016. The gospel singer was to appear on The Ellen Show along with Pharrell Williams and Janae Monae on a January episode of The Ellen Show.
Both Pharrell and Monae expressed their condemnation of hate speech targeting minorities. Pharrell shared a post on Instagram that read "I condemn hate speech of any kind. There is no room in this world for any kind of prejudice. My greatest hope is for inclusion and love for all humanity in 2017 in beyond," but he did not say what or who his post was specifically referring to. Monae reposted the image from Pharrell's account, and she added a caption reading "I unequivocally repudiate ANY AND ALL hateful comments against the LGBTQ community."
Burrell and Pharrell were scheduled to sing "I See Victory," a song from the soundtrack of "Hidden Figures," a film featuring Taraji P. Henson. Henson portrays Katherine Johnson, "an African American mathematician who calculated flight trajectories for Project Mercury and the 1969 Apollo 11 flight to the moon."
On Dec. 30, Burrell took to Facebook Live to address the criticism against her alleged hate speech. She said, "I love you and God loves you." She continued, "But God hates the sin."
