Nintendo has flat-out denied reports that Wii U games will be approaching triple figures, a figure perhaps suggested because of the games' dual functionality across the Wii U and the GamePad. Retailers listed the price, but it was only ever likely to be "fictitious."
Retailers such as the U.S. brand of Amazon listed such Wii U games as Pikmin 3 for just under $100 - $99.96 - but with the December 31, 2012 release date it's probably a placeholder. Pikmin 3 was demoed during Nintendo's E3 2012 conference, but no release date has been announced. Nintendo hasn't even announced a release date for the Wii U, its next generation gaming console, aside from promising a release by the end of 2012.
"Retailers are beginning their presale activity, but given there is no official software price, they are using fictitious prices," Nintendo said in a statement issued to video game Web site GameSpot. It added prices will change upon the announcement of the official RRP "later this year."
Wii games were priced cheaply in comparison to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 titles, which retail for an RRP of around $60. Nintendo's move into high definition graphics, along with the dual functionality, may mean an increase in price. Sony offers boxed and digital versions of its PlayStation Vita titles, such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
Nintendo President (Worldwide) Satoru Iwata previously said the company won't price highly only to be forced into a price cut like it did with the original Nintendo 3DS - the company has since announced a larger 3DS XL - which launched for $250 and was later cut to $170. The 3DS XL retails for $199.
"We won't make the same mistake we did with the 3DS, which was considered relatively high by consumers," Iwata said.
The reason the Nintendo 3DS has sold just over 17 million units worldwide, and is expected to "turn profitable by the end of this fiscal year" as Iwata said, is because of strong first-party titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and the upcoming Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Pikmin 3 could be a launch title, along with Lego City and New Super Mario Bros. U.
