Smartphone technology has continued to move forward at breakneck speed as manufacturers churn out new innovations and exciting new hardware, the most noticeable of which is the significant improvements found on smartphone displays. Now, new reports have revealed that several big-name mobile manufacturers may be readying themselves for the next big thing in smartphone display technology: the foldable OLED.
New reports from South Korea revealed that LG's Display department has apparently struck a deal with three big OEM manufacturers to become their suppliers for foldable OLED displays. Apple, Google, and Microsoft, have all reportedly signed agreements with LG to become their partner. As it stands, Samsung is the only company in the world that is able to mass produce these types of screens, but with the new contract, LG might finally step up to the plate and become a formidable mass producer of foldable OLED displays as well.
Apart from the improvements in processor speeds, increased RAM capacities, and overall hardware enhancements, a smartphone's display continues to get the first impression from consumers. Display resolutions have also vastly improved over the years, now even reaching ridiculous pixel densities like those found in 4K displays. The overall design and layout for these types of displays have also changed, with Samsung leading in the curved-display department. Xiaomi also started a new revolution, with their bezel-less display Xiaomi Mi Mix.
Next year's smartphones may eventually follow suit, with bezel-less displays likely becoming a common theme. As that novelty eventually fades, manufacturers would have to move on to a brand new one and it is likely that foldable displays may begin to appear at that time. LG has been showcasing their fordable display technology for quite a while now, but the company still hasn't come out with a commercially available product that utilizes it. With its partnership with the three big OEMs, it might only be a matter of time until users can finally get their hands on a foldable OLED display smartphone.
