Three years since the first announcement of Amazon's audacious plan to deliver its packages through drones, the retail giant has succeeded in making its first successful commercial drone delivery. The maiden commercial drone delivery was made at Cambridge, United Kingdom.

The first successful Amazon drone delivery took 13 minutes from purchase to drop-off with the drone flying at a height of 122 meters. The test delivery actually took place on December 7 was only reported by Amazon on December 14.

With the first delivery a success, the retail company is now planning to further improve its drove delivery system and is targeting a 30 minute Amazon Air delivery time. At present, the Amazon air drone delivery is only offered to delivery points close to its Cambridge fulfillment center with a plan to extend its coverage area in the near future.

The Amazon air drone can carry packages weighing up to 5lbs. The drones are completely autonomous and are able to reach their destination through GPS technology.

Numerous experts say that the drone delivery system is an attempt of Amazon to distance itself from other retail delivery companies. According to Natalie Berg of Planet Retail, though the Amazon air has considerably cut delivery time, which is a primary concern for shoppers, the drone delivery system is not an industry game changer but a success for Amazon nonetheless.

It may still take a long way for Amazon to call its drone delivery system fully operational. However, not so long ago, even the slightest concept of drone delivery is said to be inconceivable. The fact that Amazon was able to conceptualize and carry out a method to make drone delivery a reality is already an achievement in itself. With its first delivery a success, Amazon air is set to take the retail company to new heights.
