Details regarding the show's Season 3 release date is still unknown, but the first episode is speculated to air before the year ends.
Previously, series character Mr. Poopybutthole mentioned at the end of Season 2 that "Rick and Morty" Season 3 would not happen for another year and a half: if this is true, the new season would not premiere until March 2017. However, during a panel at Magic City Comic Con, the series' co-creator teased an "end of 2016" premiere date.
In a report by Cinema Blend, "Rick and Morty" writer Erica Rosbe clarified that the show's entire story for the season is already written and they have finished writing it around a month ago. It's the animation part that takes time to finish, and is a very slow process.
However, fellow writer Sarah Carbiener said that some episodes are already done animating, according to Hall of Fame Magazine. It looks like the delay of the show is due to quality concerns, since the show already has a reputation for its high-quality production value. Series co-creator Dan Harmon and his team are putting a lot of dedication into animating the episodes.
Another factor of the show's delay is their animation method called retroscripting, in which animators are trying to make the voice actors focus on improvised dialogue. It reportedly takes a lot of time adjusting to the voice actors' improvisations, with a very decent tradeoff of bringing in spontaneous comedic lines. Furthermore, the episodes are subject to screening at production offices for review.
At the end of Season 2, one of the characters, Rick Sanchez, turned himself into authorities for his crimes. The upcoming season may tackle the continuation of his story, but it seems like Rick should be fine after a few episodes, CheatSheet says. It is also revealed that Season 3 will not focus on the previous season's cliffhangers.
Stay tuned for more details about "Rick and Morty" Season 3's first episode premiere date.
