Sony has launched a new, super slow-motion camcorder that is priced just under $10,000. The camera was launched at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show in Las Vegas on Sunday.
The camera is recommended for use in TV dramas, documentaries, sports and event shooting. The NEX-FS700U is for high-speed shooting, capturing footage at up to 960 frames per second.
The camcorder will be available in June, and supports full HD shooting at 120 and 240 FPS in 16 or eight second burst mode respectively. It's also available at 480 and 960 FPS at reduced resolutions.
The FS700U users a 4k Super 35 CMOS sensor. Sony said it is planning a firmware update, which will allow the camera to output 4k bitstream data over 3G HD-SDI when used with a Sony 4k recorder.
The camera accepts most 35mm lenses with adapters. It also takes E-mount interchangeable lenses, has built-in ND filters and has a Super35 sensor with 11.6 million pixels that will be put to use when the firmware update arrives.
Sony also said in the press release the camera offers "enhanced ergonomics" and a range of shooting styles, based on customer feedback.
"You can record beautiful high speed full HD movies with the freedom of creative interchangeable lens choice," Juan Martinez, Senior Product Manager at Sony Electronics' Professional Solution of America group, said in a statement.
As for memory cards, users can save up to 99 camera profile settings and can copy the settings to multiple cameras. The cards include SD, Memory Stick cards and Sony's HXR-FMU128 flash memory units that attaches to the camera.
The camera also includes face detection and auto focus features. The camera has built-in ND filters, with an ND filter wheel that rotates across the sensor. The wheel includes positions for Clear, ¼ (2 Stop), 1/16 (4 Stop) and a 1/64 (6 Stop).
Movies such as "Oblivion," along with several TV pilots, are using the camera. Around 400 are estimated to have been sold worldwide.
The camera works across regions, as it is 60/50hz switchable.
